Meet
Dr Alex H Kang

Dr Kang is a Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Ophthalmologist based at Bunbury and Busselton Eye Specialists. Originally from South Korea, he completed his medical degree at Yonsei University—one of Korea’s premier institutions—after attending a private international school. He undertook specialist ophthalmology training at Severance Hospital, which was ranked among the world’s top 40 hospitals by Newsweek in 2024.

Before relocating to Australia in 2024, Dr Kang served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Yonsei University and a faculty member at Severance Eye Hospital. He has an extensive academic background, having authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and received multiple international awards for his presentations at leading conferences, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society.

 

Dr Kang’s clinical expertise spans surgical and medical retina, uveitis, intraocular oncology, and complex cataract surgery. He is a board-approved full member of the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Australian and New Zealand Society of Retinal Specialists (ANZSRS), Korean Retina Society (KRS), and Korean Uveitis Society (KUS).

He currently holds an appointment as Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia Medical School, Rural Clinical School of WA. Dr Kang practices privately at Bunbury and Busselton Eye Specialists and serves as a Visiting Medical Officer at WA Country Health Service, Bunbury Day Hospital, and St John of God Bunbury Hospital.

Drawn to the South West’s natural beauty and relaxed pace, Dr Kang enjoys reading and exploring the region’s tranquil outdoors in his spare time.

New Specialist Eye Surgery Now Available in Bunbury

St John of God Bunbury Hospital has launched a new vitreoretinal surgery service, led by specialist surgeon Dr Alex Kang, bringing advanced retinal treatment to the South West for the first time.

This new service allows complex conditions affecting the back of the eye, including retinal detachment and serious eye trauma, to be treated locally, reducing the need for patients to travel to Perth for urgent care.

With state-of-the-art surgical equipment and specialist expertise now available in Bunbury, patients can access faster treatment, improved outcomes, and world-class care closer to home.
